Austro Control
Company profile
"There are as many as 4,000 controlled flights in Austrian airspace on some days, often at altitudes of 10,000 metres or more. Few would suspect how much painstaking and stressful work on the ground goes into managing these traffic flows safely and efficiently - from the moment when an aircraft's engines are started up through to the point when it leaves Austrian airspace. Aided by state-of-the-art technology, our air traffic controllers bring planes into the right airways and ensure that they keep their distance from others. Around the clock, 365 days a year. In 2011 more than 1 million flight movements in Austrian airspace were handled by Austro Control."

Description of internship-content
The internship at Austro Control in Vienna (ACG) comprised a pilot study for the visualization of the official ICAO chart of Austria in the scale 1 : 500,000 on Android-based mobile platforms. Additionally all relevant information for private pilots had to be integrated and displayed. The result of this case study is a prototype application which runs on Android 2.3 and higher and which will be refined and enhanced as part of my master thesis.
Together with my advisors at ACG, the following minimum requirements have been defined:
- offline loading of the georeferenced ICAO map
- implementation of GIS base-functions such as zoom & pan
- retrieving GPS-Position and display location on the map
- deriving altitude, speed and track and display parameters on screen
- metadata & documentation
